There was a post a long time ago, now gone from my blog post-pruning, about my history with Edward Gorey. I was introduced to Edward Gorey in 1963 and collected him for years, then stopped. And blah, blah, blah.
The subject of his The Gashlycrumb Tinies, or After the Outing came up briefly last week in Savannah, and when I got home that set me to thumbing through several of his little books, including that one.
Everybody loves Neville, myself included, but Prue may be my favorite.
There’s something wrong about saying that, isn’t there.

I’ve been reading a dishy little memoir called “Dropped Names” by Frank Langella and was reminded that Gorey did both the scenic and costume designs for the 1977 B’dway production of Dracula. Wikipedia tells us he was nominated for Tony awards for both and won for the costume designs.

A friend sent me ‘Dropped Names’ and I guess in my simple boyish naïveté I didn’t expect some of these people to be so nasty. Also, I found Langella to be particularly chilly and clinical while spilling the beans. Very ‘Dracula’;-)
I’ve lost track of who might know what of Edward Gorey lore: Does everybody know that there is always a calling card in more or less plain view in one of the illustrations in each of his books? There it is, floating in the water as Maud is swept out to sea.

Reading this Gorey tidbit made me smile and remember our pleasant time together.
